Hillenburg was raised in Anaheim, California and was born in Lawton in Oklahoma. Hillenburg was fascinated by water as a child and developed an interest in art.

His professional career began in 1984 at Orange County Marine Institute. He taught marine biology and wrote The Intertidal Zone. This picture book was an educational tool for his students about tidepool species.

He graduated from Humboldt State University, in 1984 and received a bachelor’s degree with a specialization in natural resource planning and interpretation.

The Orange County Marine Institute, now the Ocean Institute in Dana Point (California) became his marine biology teaching position. His love for the sea and his artistic talent led him to create and illustrate stories that would be used as teaching tools. These characters would become SpongeBob’s home at Bikini Bottom.

In 1987, he began his animation career. He studied Experimental Animation at the California Institute of Arts Valencia. He then earned his Master of Fine Arts in 1992.

He won the Ottawa International Animation Festival Award for Best Animated Concept for “Wormholes” in the same year. This animated short was later shown at several international animation festivals.

Stephen Hillenburg, creator of Nickelodeon’s mega-popular animated series, “SpongeBob SquarePants,” has passed away. At the time, he was 57 years of age. Hillenburg died of ALS. He stated that he was first diagnosed in March last year.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years Karen Hillenburg, son Clay, mother Nancy Hillenburg (nee Dufour) and brother Brian Kelly Hillenburg, his wife Isabel, and nieces Emma and Hazel.
