Norman Eugene Walker was born on May 30, 1927, in Hartford, Illinois, to Gladys Huldah (nee Schwanda) and Paul Arnold Walker. Walker quit high school and began working in factories as well as on a riverboat, before becoming a member of the US Merchant Marine at the age of 17 during the latter days of WWII.

Walker was almost killed in a skiing accident on Mammoth Mountain in California in May 1971. Walker was struck through his heart with a pole from a ski after being thrown off a ski lift.

He was transported to the hospital before he was declared dead. However, a doctor saw some indicators of life and sent Walker to the ICU where his injured heart was repaired. Walker returned to work in just two months.

He has said that he was in a state of near-death as an outcome of the incident. Walker passed away from congestive heart malfunction on May 21 in 2018, just nine days prior to his 91st birthday located in Grass Valley, California.
