A new Act 440, which went into effect on Sunday, requires residents who seek to gain access to porn sites like PornHub to prove their age with government-issued identification.
- On websites showcasing adult-only content, verifying your age used to be a simple process.
- But in Louisiana, that’s no longer the case.
Websites that host content that can be considered porn have to implement “reasonable age verification methods,” including asking users to present a government-issued ID or a digitized form of it.

Louisiana residents who try to visit adult movie sites like PornHub are greeted by a screen stating: “Louisiana law now requires us to put in place a process for verifying the age of users who connect to our site from Louisiana.”
Through a third-party verification site called AllPassTrust, users need to connect their digital ID or driver’s license through LAWallet, Louisiana’s digital driver’s license platform. It appears that other porn streaming sites have yet to be affected.

With Louisiana’s new law, experts argue that the verification process could potentially come with serious privacy risks for users. Regardless, the new law aims to hold adult websites accountable.
Louisiana is the first U.S. state to implement age verification to view adult content online. Other states, such as California, have passed similar laws restricting minors’ access.
